California State Parks, Angeles District, and Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (SMMTC) conducted a workshop on November 18, 2006, for volunteers interested in basic trail maintenance skills. Classroom instruction and hands-on instruction covered safety, brush removal, erosion control and tread restoration. Lead by Frank Padilla, Jr., retired trails maintenance supervisor for the Angeles District, the workshop was held in Malibu Creek State Park from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Classroom instruction was conducted in the district administration center and actual trail work was performed on a section of Chapparal Trail near Mott Road. A light lunch was provided by the Trails Council.

In attendance were trail maintenance volunteers and prospective volunteers and members of various park agencies including the U.S. Forest Service, Pipes Canyon Wildlands Conservancy (Yucaipa, CA), MRCA Fire Fighters, Angeles District State Parks, City of Fullerton Parks and Recreation as well as many Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council members.

The Council performs trail maintenance every Saturday, September through June. Additional information can be found at, including the schedule of projects, directions to trailheads, and crew leaders. Interested parties should contact the designated crew leader prior to the day of the project for instructions.
