In the first half of 2022, the Trails Council (led by Jerry Mitcham and Jon Sheldon) partnered with State Parks to assess and improve the trail signage in Pt. Mugu State Park. This includes funding and installation of new signs plus the removal of obsolete signage. All new signs will have UV protection and be installed with tamper-resistant hardware.

Each existing sign and all junctions in the park were photographed, mapped and documented in a spreadsheet with comments as to current status and recommendations for improvement. Suggestions were also added for new signage at unsigned junctions and for signs that should be considered for removal, resulting in a comprehensive plan for signing the entire park.

Multiple survey trips throughout the park revealed that many existing signs:

  • Were unreadable due to fire, vandalization or sun damage
  • Referenced incorrect or obsolete trail names
  • Indicated incorrect mileage
  • Confused readers on what the destination
  • Were nearly non-existent along the route of the Backbone Trail

Finally, only about 10% of the trail junctions were completely signed.

One of the outcomes of this effort was realizing the complexity of the trail system in Pt. Mugu State Park. There are 39 named trails/roads covering 72 miles with 7 entry points and 64 junctions. This made developing a signage plan challenging as there are oftentimes multiple routes to a specific point in most areas of the park.

Given the large size of the park, it was decided to implement the project in multiple phases.

The 2007 Signs Project

In an effort running from January through June 2007 and coordinated by Trails Council member Jerry Mitcham, seventy-three new trail signs were installed throughout Point Mugu State Park. Two years earlier (2005), the Trails Superintendent for the Angles District of State Parks, designed and ordered a complete set of new trail signs for Point Mugu. When the new signs were delivered, the local park district was short of funds to install the signs so the Trails Council volunteered to install the signs.

The new signs replace many missing or damaged signs and provide additional signage for trail identification and information. The project replaced all existing signs and added many additional signs throughout the park. Trails Council volunteers worked closely with State Parks personnel to determine requirements for posts, installation tools, hardware, placement, etc.

The Trails Council’s installation plan relied on the labor of local volunteers. Some signs were installed as a part of regular SMMTC trail maintenance projects while others were installed by special sign projects. The largest contribution of volunteer hours was by two Eagle Scout candidates, installing signs for their respective eagle projects.

Jason Templer of Troop 730 in Newbury Park and James Costello of Troop 765 in Thousand Oaks installed a combined total of fifty-two signs, approximately two thirds of the total project. Planning for the project began in January and the last signs were installed in late June. In addition to volunteer hours, Trails Council and the Eagle Scout candidates provided financial support to purchase sign posts and other installation hardware.
