Michelob Go The Extra Mile Update

Agoura, CA - Michelob Ultra and the American Hiking Society awarded a grant of $21,800 to the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council through participation in the "Go The Extra Mile Fund" initiative. Twelve trails across the country were selected and competed for a share of $200,000 based on the percentage of online votes each received. Funds granted to the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council will support improvements and maintenance of the recently completed Backbone Trail within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area. Designated a National Recreation Trail by the United States Department of the Interior in June 2016, the Backbone Trail, sixty-seven miles long was decades in the making.
Funds awarded in two phases over the next half year will allow the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council to continue their focus on the Backbone Trail system and provide support through programs benefiting all users of our public trails.
The "Go The Extra Mile" Fund initiative profiled the Backbone Trail and eleven other regional trails across the United States on the Michelob Ultra website. Support from the local trail user community -people voted for their favorite trail - determined the amount of the grants. The Backbone Trail came in fourth place with 12% of the overall votes. The Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council promoted this contest through social media and networking, including community outreach events, contacting local organizations, Facebook (where we had over 7,000 page views), and Meetup.com hiking groups that include thousands of members. Voters included Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council members, and folks from equestrian, hiking, trail running, and mountain biking organizations. Many people shared the message and encouraged others to support the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and vote for the Backbone Trail.
The Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council is thankful for the support and participation of trail enthusiasts in the Michelob Ultra and American Hiking Society "Go The ExtraMile" program that will allow them to continue its focus on the improvement and maintenance of the Backbone Trail.
